#TeacherWeek2015

Hey ya’ll! I’m linking up with Blog Hoppin’ for #TeacherWeek2015. Here are my five fun facts about me!

1.       I was in a sorority in college. Delta Gamma represent! It was an amazing time in my life and I loved every second of it. I’ve met so many people thanks to this wonderful organization and I can’t say enough good things about it. Plus, I was never hazed or mistreated. Beat the stereotype ladies!

2.     I have family who lives near Chicago and I fell in love with the city when I was young. We’ve been going there since before I can remember to visit and I used to claim I was a “city girl”. Yep…Chicago made me hate being a “country girl”. Since then, I’ve changed “country” to “southern” which suits me just fine now! I embrace it! But way back when…I’d hide my accent from everyone!
3.     I’m a Batman fanatic. There I said it. I read the comics, watch every piece of cartoon/movie action I can get, and force my boyfriend to watch The Dark Knight over and over and over again. #admitted
4.     I’m Taylor Swift #obsessed. I’ve been to two concerts and sadly, missed out on tickets to the Nashville Show this year. It’s coming up soon and the closer it gets, the sadder I am. = (

5.     I’m the last “single” gal. Out of the group of three teachers who I graduated undergrad with, 2/3 of us are engaged/married. I’m excited to piece together the photos of each of us when we are all married in our bridal gowns, but until then, I’ll have photos of them in white and me in bridesmaid attire to treasure.

Second Week Syndrome

If you’ve read my last few blog posts, then you know that my boyfriend Elijah and I have been working tirelessly to get his residency applications in and approved. Finally, there is a little glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel that is medical school for us (I say us because…well…I feel like I should have an honorary degree. Right? Right.). This week we officially entered the last bits of his ERAS. He’s just waiting on the interviews to come in (fingers crossed). He’s finished just in time for his 29th birthday on September 3rd, which I have made plans to make special next week. On my end of things, I’ve been enjoying not being a student for a little while and putting my all into teaching. Sadly, my degree has not arrived in the mail yet, but my transcript made it to the board of education so that is a bright spot! = )

The second week of school has been…enlightening to say the least. First, let me say that typically I have a pretty positive attitude about my new students. This year is no different and they are sweet, sweet, sweet! Very well behaved. BUT… Today, we had a lesson on understanding the number line…it did not go over well at all. They can’t seem to understand that number lines can skip count. Which is key to understanding multiplication. Needless to say, I’m in panic mode. If I figure out a magical way to put the math skills in their brains, I’ll let you know. Today’s number has gotten a lot better and has improved a lot of those skills. It’s the little things. = )

Enough about math for now, let’s move on to the fun part. I’m about to start my annual “How to Blow a Bubble” writing unit, and in science we are making ecosystem “shoeboxes”. I’m hoping that by the end of the week, our writing will be good enough to publish for the hallway and that our shoeboxes will fill the hallway up with awesome work! Plus, maybe we will gain some procedural writing experience. = ) Pictures to come! Also, as soon as the blog design is finished I’ll do an official classroom reveal + an exciting giveaway! Stay tuned!

There is No Tired Like Teacher Tired

Hi friends! I am so excited to finally get a chance to blog again. So, by this point in the school year, we have only really been in school for an entire week. We went back on Monday and I don’t even know if I can recall what has happened the last 5 days. On top of that, Elijah and I have been hard at work trying to turn in his ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) documents and get everything ready for his interviews. It’s been absolutely insane. I go over to his house on the weekends and hang out/study/cook/try to make his life a little easier. He’s offered to help grade papers before, so right now, it’s my turn to be accommodating.

From the moment these kids hit the door of my classroom, we have been work, work, work, work, working on….math. It’s been hard for me to reset my brain to what are essentially second graders right now.

Any third grade teacher will tell you that everything in third grade is new. There is absolutely no time for review. We try to squeeze it in where we can, but it always ends up being pretty brief. We just don’t have time. (Let that be a note to all you fabulous second grade teachers out there…when the going gets tough, please remember your third grade teacher appreciate the work you do.)

One thing that I use daily to help my students remember some second grade skills (as well as sneakily learn some beginning of third grade skills) is a little diddy that I like to call Today’s Number. Normally, I try to begin my math block by reviewing this after my students have completed it that morning. Be patient with them if you decide to go this route. It has taken us four times of doing it together before they were ready to complete it on their own and even then, I had lot’s of kids who “forgot” how to complete certain parts (and mysteriously, how to complete a fact family without me).

Anyway, I am attaching a link to my TPT store where you can buy this product. I made this a terribly long time ago, and I can’t seem to find where I borrowed the clip art from or anything so if you happen to know, let me know in the comments so I can give credit where it’s due. Keep in mind that this product is for the BEGINNING of the year. I change it throughout the year to fit our standards. I’ll be giving you those later in the year as we get to it.

I've found them!

That's right! You read correctly! I officially put a deposit down on a blog design! Yukari from Designs by Yukari (you can find her here------> http://designsbyyukari.blogspot.ca/ ) is going to be designing my blog. If you check her blog out, then you can see my name listed under "September" I can't wait! In the meantime, I'm planning on trying to keep with some interesting posts, despite the construction process with the blog. You can see it's not super cute, but I hope that you can look past that and into the content of my blog for now. Tomorrow, I am taking pics of my classroom to put up for before and after and the best news of the day is....I had almost 100% participation in parent orientation today! AHHHHH! If you are a teacher, you know how hard it can be to get parents to come in sometimes, but I have a group of parents who want to be involved this year I think. I had 10 parents who wanted to help in the room by being a room parent. That's amazing also! I can't believe that I have that much participation! I am one lucky teacher! Until next time...

School is Almost Here! Inservice is arriving quickly.

Hello friends! While I write this post my boyfriend is sitting next to me studying for his big Step 2 CK test in a couple of weeks. Those of you who don’t know, that’s one of the three (4?) major tests that medical students have to take before they graduate. Last summer, he had to take Step 1 (which was a nightmare, I felt so sorry for him…it was like one big state assessment, to speak in teacher terms) and now he’s preparing for Step 2 (he already did the clinical portion now he’s taking the written one). Thankfully, this is the last test that he will have to take before he graduates with his M.D. and then it’s off to residency. (I’m hoping for an engagement ring this fall so I can go with him…shhh….) Anyway, that means I get more blogging time for the blog. I am currently in the process of checking out people who design blogs for a living since let’s face it…I’m terrible at coding. I’ve been searching for a company to help me along and I’ve also been preparing some new materials for TPT to launch with my blog.

In other news, school starts for teachers on Friday! I have a hair appointment and a lot of work to do before then. I’m also planning on throwing in some clothes shopping and nail time so I look nice for the orientation day and meet the teacher day as well. At my school, we do a parent only orientation and then a meet and greet for kids the next day. Then that Monday (August 17th) the kids will come to school! I’m not ready just yet, but my room sure does look like it’s ready. I have a few finishing touches before I share pictures of my room.

Also, I’m looking for some feedback on a couple of items…Silhouette Cameos and fitbits. Does anyone use these? Tune into the blog next week to see pics of my room!
