Hi friends!
I am so excited to finally get a chance to blog again. So, by this point in the
school year, we have only really been in school for an entire week. We went
back on Monday and I don’t even know if I can recall what has happened the last
5 days. On top of that, Elijah and I have been hard at work trying to turn in
his ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) documents and get everything
ready for his interviews. It’s been absolutely insane. I go over to his house
on the weekends and hang out/study/cook/try to make his life a little easier.
He’s offered to help grade papers before, so right now, it’s my turn to be accommodating.
From the
moment these kids hit the door of my classroom, we have been work, work, work,
work, working on….math. It’s been hard for me to reset my brain to
what are essentially second graders right now.
Any third
grade teacher will tell you that everything in third grade is new. There is
absolutely no time for review. We try to squeeze it in where we can, but it
always ends up being pretty brief. We just don’t have time. (Let that be a note
to all you fabulous second grade teachers out there…when the going gets tough,
please remember your third grade teacher appreciate the work you do.)
One thing
that I use daily to help my students remember some second grade skills (as well
as sneakily learn some beginning of third grade skills) is a little diddy that
I like to call Today’s Number. Normally,
I try to begin my math block by reviewing this after my students have completed
it that morning. Be patient with them if you decide to go this route. It has
taken us four times of doing it together before they were ready to complete it
on their own and even then, I had lot’s of kids who “forgot” how to complete
certain parts (and mysteriously, how to complete a fact family without me).
Anyway, I
am attaching a link to my TPT store where you can buy this product. I made this
a terribly long time ago, and I can’t seem to find where I borrowed the clip
art from or anything so if you happen to know, let me know in the comments so I
can give credit where it’s due. Keep in mind that this product is for the
BEGINNING of the year. I change it throughout the year to fit our standards. I’ll
be giving you those later in the year as we get to it.

I wish you
all the best in your mathematical journeys!
